Lactoferrin: what it is and what it is used for
It is a protein capable of binding iron, preventing the development of bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses that need this element, in particular intestinal pathogens. According to the Specchiasol research, lactoferrin exerts an inhibiting action on infections since it promotes the growth of normal bacterial flora, which is not iron-dependent. It also performs a powerful inhibitory activity against many viruses. Ultimately it prevents the colonization of the mucous surfaces by bacteria, fungi, parasites and pathogenic viruses, preventing subsequent penetration into the host’s cells. In this way, lactoferrin contributes to maintaining a healthy intestinal flora, enhancing the barrier effect of the intestinal mucosa and increasing resistance to colonization by potentially harmful germs.
