5 effective natural remedies to treat the cold

The common cold is caused by the rhinovirus. It is an infectious disease, generally not serious, of the first respiratory tract and in particular of the nose and throat; its symptoms include sneezing, abundant production of mucus, nasal congestion, phlegm and sore throat, cough, headache, feeling tired.

It is the most common human disease; the cold virus is typically transmitted through droplets present in the air, through direct contact with objects no infected nasal secretions. Viruses can survive for prolonged periods in the environment and can be collected on people's hands and subsequently brought to the eyes or nose, where the infection can then occur. Transmission is facilitated by the proximity of many children, characterized by weak immune defenses and poor hygiene, which occurs in nurseries and schools; once the disease is contracted in these environments, the children can pass it on to the other members of the family at home.

The term "sinusitis" refers to the inflammation of the mucosa that covers the paranasal sinuses, cavities dug into the bones of the skull in direct communication with the nasal cavities, through openings called "hosts". Following inflammation, the mucous membranes of the breasts swell and secrete copious amounts of mucus.

Symptoms of sinusitis are mainly characterized by pain and pressure in the area of the face at the breast or the affected paranasal sinuses. Pain above the upper dental arch, often confused with dental problems, is caused by inflammation of the maxillary sinus; the frontal headache, with pain in the eyes and temples. Other symptoms of sinusitis are: stuffy nose, reduction of sensations of taste and smell, cough with phlegm, fever, swelling around the eyes.

Sinusitis can be triggered by any inflammatory process of the paranasal cavities such as the cold. Generally sinusitis is the consequence of a badly treated cold: a healthy human body should be able to resolve the cold infection within 1-2 weeks without the complication of sinusitis. It is therefore essential to strengthen the immune system.

The recurrent sinusitis are often associated with situations of intestinal dysbiosis, caused by a refined diet, poor in nutrients, with the presence of preservatives, dyes, heavy metals. The food intolerance to some foods, often unrecognized, may also be the basis. Eliminating milk and dairy products, with their high content in casein, is the first food step to be taken for those suffering from episodes of recurrent sinusitis; it is also recommended to avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages, preferring hot liquids instead, herbal teas (in our department we have the functional herbal tea "GolaSol", useful for the wellbeing of the nose and throat) in order to favor the drainage of the mucous membranes.

The phytotherapeutic approach to strengthen the immune system

In addition to targeted nutrition, the phytotherapeutic approach is fundamental in order to re-establish the correct balance of the organism. As a first step, especially in the case of colds and sinusitis that occur throughout the year, it is essential to strengthen the immune system. There are two specific formulas for adults and juniors that are carefully designed without chemical ingredients: Fitosostegno and Fitosostegno junior Syrup. studied and verified at the University of Siena. Both formulations are characterized by the soft extract of heather flowers, which has proved to be an excellent immunomodulator. The action is completed in junior Fitostegno: rosa canina, which performs a positive support and restorative action, and in Fitosostegno, also Uncaria and Echinacea which are useful for the body's natural defenses.

Our natural aerosol

The alimentary approach (especially in the case of sinusitis) and systemic phytotherapic, are fundamental for a general rebalancing of the organism, but on their own they are not sufficient to solve the problem in an acute way. This is why a phytotherapic aerosol, FitoAerosol, based on plant complexes indicated as a specific adjuvant for typical cold symptoms such as nasal congestion and irritation of the nasal mucosa, has been formulated for the local action. Its components are plant extracts of: Drosera, Echinacea, Grapefruit seeds, Thyme Serpillo and essential oils of Pino Mugo and Eucalyptus. The presence of sea water completes the formulation allowing FitoAerosol to reduce nasal congestion and restore the sensation of a free nose. Fitoaerosol is available in adult and junior versions, from 3 years of age.

It is also available the nasal spray formulation without preservatives Fitohyalo, for the treatment of colds and sinusitis of adults and children: FitoHyalo promotes the washing of the nasal fossa with an effective removal of nasal secretions, and is based on glyceric extracts of grapefruit, echinacea, drosera and thyme serpillo, plants known for their beneficial actions in the mucosa of the upper airways that contribute to the natural physiological well-being of the mucosa, favoring its hydration and product compliance. FitoHyalo has been formulated without added preservatives, it does not contain vasoconstrictive decongestants, it does not create habituation, it is suitable for frequent use.

Approach with essential oils against colds and sinusitis

Essential oils can be used to improve respiratory disorders, in particular to improve expectoration and decrease the viscosity of bronchial mucus, to increase rhythm and respiratory volume and naturally to have a direct action on respiratory pathogens. For cough, phlegm, bronchitis and cold and sinusitis among the classics there are essential oils of Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Myrtle. In this case the most direct and simple use is that of inhalation, in aerosols, for adults.

More practical, if you want to use the essential oils for respiratory disorders, the use of ready-made balsamic mixes, such as the balsamic mixes Gadoi, in the adult version and child in practical roll-on. The adult mix contains essential oils rich in molecules active on the respiratory tract, able to reduce the symptoms of cough and respiratory catarrh, improve breathing and reduce the sensation of congestion. They also have antimicrobial activity (Savory, Lavandin, Common Mirtle essential olis), mucoactive (Lavandin, wild silver fir, mountain pine and common myrtle), decongestant (common myrtleLavandin). The balsamic mix Kids instead contains safe essential oils for children of any age, and have been chosen to reduce the symptoms of cough and respiratory catarrh, and improve breathing in children. They have anti-inflammatory activity (Helichrysum, Lavender), antimicrobial (Lavender, Lavandin), mucoactive (Lavandin, wild silver fir) and balsamic (wild silver fir, Helichrysum).

The approach with Bud Extracts and mothers tinctures and our advice

As far as sinusitis is concerned, the Birch bud extract is generally used successfully, for its anti-toxic action and for being the ideal complement to any other bud extract. Eventually Ribes nigrum bud extract may also be used for the mentioned anti-inflammatory and decongestant action.

For the annoying "repeating rhinopharyngitis" affecting children during the cold season as soon as they return to kindergarten or to school, the specific gems are: silver fir bud extract (Abies pectinata, for its action on the child with weight-based delays and frequently affected by glandular hypertrophy of adenoids, tonsils, rhinopharynx, Birch bud extract (Betula pubescens) which "exerts a tonic-stimulating drainage action that prepares the organism for the action of other gemmoderivatives. Blackcurrant bud extract (Ribes nigrum) antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, complementary remedy of all inflammatory states of the respiratory system: recurrent rhinopharyngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, bronchial asthma, vasomotor rhinitis, flu syndromes, Rose hip bud extract, young jets, because remedy localized and regenerative inflammation in relapsing inflammations.

We recommend preparing 125 ml bottles of Fir, Ribes, Rosehip in equal quantities, to be administered at a dose of 15 drops, morning and evening, in children from 1 to 3 years; at a dose of 30 drops, morning and evening, in children 4 to 8 years. The treatment that starts at the end of September, continues until November and then repeats itself, at least 10 days a month, to end in March.

In the adult it is useful instead the Echinacea angustifolia mother tincture, immunostimulant, antibacterial and antiviral plant whose actions are due to an ester of caffeic acid. It is used in the galenic form of Mother Tincture at a dose of 30 drops 2, 3 times a day without ever exceeding 10 days of treatment in order to stimulate the body to an autonomous immune stimulating response. During the season at risk of infections, the treatment is repeated every 15 days with the doses and methods described above.
